Royal Matcha Green Tea

You've probably heard a lot lately about the benefits of green tea. You may even be drinking green tea on a daily basis. However, you may not know about royal matcha green tea. Matcha is a form of powdered green tea that is widely used in Japan. It is an integral part of the Japanese tea ceremony. The ceremony is so much more than just making and serving tea. Based on the teachings of Zen Buddhism and the Tao Te Ching, this ceremony is an art form to those who practice it. In addition, matcha tea is also often used for coloring and flavoring other beverages and foods such as noodles and ice cream.
Unlike other kinds of green tea, matcha has a bright green color. It often costs more than other varieties of green tea. Like all tea, matcha comes from the camellia sinensis plant. However the plant is prepared and harvested a bit differently with matcha. First, the plants are covered to prevent them from getting direct sunlight. This works in two ways. By slowing the growth of the plant by reducing light, the tea becomes more green in color and sweet in flavor. After the harvest of the leaves, they are laid flat to dry. This drying method produces what is called tencha. The stems and veins are removed from the tencha leaves and it is finely ground into matcha powder.
One reason matcha is preferred to other types of green tea is because it retains even more of the powerful antioxidants that makes green tea so beneficial in the first place. One component found in matcha that is in a higher concentration is chlorophyll, which accounts for the bright green color. In addition matcha contains the catechin polyphenols that experts believe are responsible for the health benefits of green tea. The antioxidants in the tea may help eradicate dangerous free radicals in the body. Free radicals may play a role in the development of maladies including cancer and heart disease. Not only does matcha offer health benefits, it tastes great. It does not have the bitter taste of other teas.
Preparing royal matcha green tea is a bit different than preparing other types of green tea. You will need hot water (not boiling) and a ceramic tea bowl. The matcha is placed in the bowl, with the normal serving size being one teaspoon per average sized teacup. The hot water is then poured into the bowl and the mixture is whisked until no lumps or particles remain. You can find all kinds of matcha brands on the market today, which can be used to make hot or even iced tea. A good place to start your search is your local health food store, which may sell organic matcha. If not, this type of tea can be purchased online.
