The green tea craze seems to be sweeping the nation. There are even green tea capsules on the market that claim to give you equal if not more benefits than traditional tea. The media tells us that green tea can do everything from prevent cancer to help you lose weight. But is it true? To answer this question, it's important to look at the components of green tea and how they work. Green tea comes from the camellia sinensis plant, which is the plant from which all tea is derived. Green tea is the same plant as white, oolong and black tea. However, it differs in its level of oxidation.

Green tea is picked when young and steamed right after harvest which helps it retain its color and antioxidants. Antioxidants help neutralize harmful free radicals that may cause cellular changes and lead to diseases like cancer. The powerful antioxidants in green tea also help speed up the metabolism and burn calories, which is why green tea is featured in so many diet supplements. There are many benefits of green tea being heralded by researchers all over the globe. By taking green tea in pill form, you may be able to get more standardized antioxidants than you would if you drank the tea.

Green tea in supplement form may include other ingredients to enhance the purpose of the supplement. For example, a supplement for overall health may contain added vitamins and nutrients while a supplement for weight loss may contain herbal ingredients that work together with green tea to burn extra calories. When shopping for green tea supplements you should always read the label to see all the ingredients. While green tea is considered very safe there are certain herbs that may interact with other medications or conditions.

You may wonder why people would take green tea capsules rather than just drinking the tea. One reason is because it may be possible to get more antioxidants when taking capsules instead of drinking tea. Also, capsules may contain less caffeine than brewed tea. Some people just don't like the taste of tea and find it more pleasant to swallow a few capsules each day.
