There has been a lot of hype surrounding the health benefits of green tea. Experts believe that green tea may play a role in reducing the risk of dangerous diseases like cancer. Green tea and cancer is a subject that you may want to learn more about. One way that green tea may prevent this disease is through its level of powerful antioxidants. Antioxidants bind to harmful disease causing free radicals, also known as oxidants. They render these oxidants harmless which is why they may prevent disease. Green tea contains a variety of antioxidants, including EGCG.
EGCG is a type of antioxidant that is approximately 100 times more powerful than vitamin C. There have been a variety of studies in both Asia and the U.S. that show EGCG may help prevent cancer and even other conditions like heart disease and osteoporosis. In Japan, where there are heavier smokers on average, the level of cancer is lower than researchers would expect and it is thought that the regular consumption of green tea may play a role. That doesn't mean you should smoke cigarettes and call it safe as long as you drink green tea. Quitting is always the best option. However, adding green tea to your diet may help to reduce your cancer risk, especially when combined with a healthy lifestyle.
The effects of green tea on cancer may even be more potent than researchers originally thought when the connection was made. A study back in 2003 by Rochester University showed the chemicals found in green tea worked on mouse cells by shutting down AH receptors which may activate cancerous changes. Whether or not the tea has the same effect on humans has yet to be determined. There may be some doubt about exactly how green tea inhibits cancer, but there is no doubt that green tea is a healthy beverage choice for most everyone.
If you want to learn more about green tea and cancer, there is a lot of information online and even in books. You should also speak to your doctor, who can tell you whether or not green tea is recommended for you. Most people can benefit from drinking green tea on a daily basis. However if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or planning to become pregnant you may be told to avoid green tea for the time being.
